    The collection contains correspondence relating to Upcott's collections of books, manuscripts, and prints. Much of the correspondence is between Upcott and various collectors with whom he engaged in business. Issues addressed within the correspondence include the life and work of William Upcott and 19th century bookselling and collecting practices. Correspondents include Charles Dickens, Sir William Fitzroy, Josiah Forshall, William Henry Hyett, Sir Thomas Phillipps, George Palmer Putnam, Markham E. Sherwill, Charles Hampden Turner and Dawson Turner.

    William Burchell papers, (bulk 1805-1812)

    This small group of material consists of eight letters to and from William Burchell regarding his finances, Naval commissions, and the ships Orion and Saturn. British Royal Navy officer Lord Amelius Beauclerk is an addressee of one of the letters and a subject of several other letters. Also included are charts (call and compass signals) for the Royal Navy's Scheldt Fleet, Channel Fleet, Baltick [sic] Fleet, and the Cadiz Fleet; four commissions of Burchell (1809-1812); and two signal books kept by Burchell. There is also a memo by Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm regarding parole and countersign terms. There are also notes on British Navy signals that are from the early 20th century (author unknown).
